Dalai Lama là vị thầy cao nhất trong danh hiệu “Mũ vàng” (“Yellow Hat”) của Phật giáo Tây Tạng. Dalai Lama là tên kết hợp giữa từ Dalai (tiếng Mông Cổ nghĩa là “Đại dương”) và từ Lama (tiếng Tây Tạng, nguyên gốc là bla-ma, với “b” câm, nghĩa là “lãnh tụ, thầy tu cao nhất”). Vị Dalai Lama hiện nay là vị thứ 14 – Tenzin Gyatzo (tên đầy đủ: Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso), sinh ngày 6/7/1935 tại làng Taktser, Amdo, Đông Bắc Tây Tạng.
